What are Community Reporting Centres? Print E-mail

Cheshire Police, Halton Borough Council and its partner agencies recognises that sometimes the public may feel mistrustful or too intimidated to contact the police directly about hate crimes.

A hate crime is when someone or groups of people verbally abuse, intimidate, threaten or physically abuse someone because of their faith, disability, sexual orientation, gender or race. For this reason we commenced a collaborative project with partner agencies, to offer a safe, comfortable environment for people to report Hate Crimes and Incidents.

We are working with a variety of statutory agencies and community/voluntary sector organisations to create alternative facilities for reporting Hate Crimes and Incidents. Our rationale is to have a service that is victim rather than police led and to build confidence with our local communities.

The Benefits of Community Reporting Centres

• Reporting Centres are a way to overcome the communication boundaries that sometimes exist between the police and local communities.

• It enables victims of hate crime to report their incident in an environment of their choosing where they feel confident.

• Victims are able to report anonymously which will still enable the police to gather information on the levels of hate crime and hot spots to information share.

• Centres ensure a victim led approach.

• They ensure victims who may not have previously reported incidents get the relevant help and support they require.

• Reporting Centres provide a clearer picture on what is happening and where. This allows police resources, communities and agencies to work together to tackle hate crime.

The reporting centres and contact details are listed below, however if you require further information about hate crimes please contact the Community Safety Team on 0151 495 5827.

If you would like to report a hate crime out of office working hours and the Reporting Centre is unavailable, ring Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000 and specify that you are reporting a hate crime, you will be allocated a special incident reference number and the Police Officer will explain what they will do with your concerns.
