Child and Family Poverty Strategy for Halton launched

Halton's Child and Family Poverty Strategy has been launched. The Strategy outlines the current level of child and family poverty in Halton, and our commitment to work towards achieving the very challenging target set by the 2010 Child Poverty Act to eradicate it by 2020. We believe that partnership working is the best way to achieve this.

In Halton around 6,550 (26.4%) of our children are currently growing-up in poverty. Whilst this puts Halton below the average for the Liverpool City Region, it highlights the considerable challenge in front of us.

The Strategy covers a relatively short timeframe. This is because we will be reviewing the Needs Assessment that underpins our strategy in 2013 to make sure our actions are based on the most up to date information.

Key underlying causes of child and family poverty in Halton include:

  1. Some families feel that they will never move out of poverty which restricts their aspirations
  2. A cycle of benefit dependency which can be an intergenerational issue

Key priorities to tackle child and family poverty in Halton:

  1. Cultural challenge and realising aspirations
  2. Early intervention
  3. Whole family approach
  4. Providing a single point of access to support services

Key issues to overcome first to tackle child and family poverty in Halton:

  1. Ensuring that support services meet the needs of target groups now and in the future and are easily accessible
  2. Improving the sharing of information between partners to provide greater support to customers

We have also agreed with our partners a Development Plan which displays our shared commitment to tackle this major issue for Halton. We will keep you informed as our work around this Strategy develops.

Give'n'take

Safer Halton Partnership is reminding local residents to keep their property and goods safe over the Christmas period with two key messages.

Give’n’take

Remember: IF YOU GIVE THIEVES A CHANCE – THEY WILL TAKE IT

• Remember to keep cash secure and out of sight
• Remember to carry your bag close to your body; don’t put your purse/wallet in your back pocket
• Remember don’t leave purses, wallets or handbags unattended
• Remember do not flaunt expensive items such as MP3/4 players, mobile phones and PDAs

Display’n’pay

Remember: IF YOU LEAVE YOUR PROPERTY AND GOODS ON DISPLAY – YOU WILL END UP PAYING

• Remember hide all valuables when you leave your car
• Remember to lock doors and windows – even if you are stopping for just a minute
• Remember to park in well lit places
• Remember to activate alarm or immobiliser

On show it'll go!

Safer Halton Partnership will be out and about in Halton to remind people of these messages during December.

My Halton Foody Fortnight

Halton Borough Council and Halton Strategic Partnership are providing food for thought during Foody Fortnight (Saturday 17 September to Sunday 2 October) - and giving local residents a taster of what culinary delights the area has to offer.

The event will include chef demonstrations, local food, and will encourage people to eat healthily and cook for themselves, as well as events for young people at CRMZ in Widnes and events held at Norton Priory.

Businesses such as the Holiday Inn Hotel, Runcorn, and Daresbury Dairies, as well as children's centres, nurseries and schools, will be joining in the foody fun as well as the Stobart Stadium and Halton's parks.

Events will be linked in with the 10th annual, National British Food Fortnight which celebrates the diverse and delicious range of food that Britain produces nationwide, with promotions and tastings in shops, all-British menus in pubs/restaurants, food/cookery lessons in schools and glorious food festivals.

Halton Borough Council's Leader and Chair of Halton Strategic Partnership, Cllr Rob Polhill, said: "Lots of organisations are working together to focus on food and health for people all across Halton. Our events are about healthy choices, cookery skills and tasting new foods.

"At a time when supporting our local businesses is so important, I hope people will back their local food producers and retailers by buying locally."

Promotions within the scheme include New Shoots, where fresh, seasonal, and local produce is available for a lot cheaper than at the supermarkets.

Young Addaction will be running "TastyBitz" during the Foody Fortnight. The aim is to travel around the world bringing an array of healthy option dishes from five continents and get those taste buds going.

Big events include three free “Chefs on Stage” events at Halton’s markets, featuring Brian Mellor and surprise guests including a chef from Portugal and a finalist of the School Cook Of The Year. There will also be a range of other services on hand to talk to you about health and home safety.
